Introduction to Public Transport in NSW

In NSW Public Transport is most commonly found in the form of trains, buses, ferries and light rail.
Trains
Within the Sydney metropolitan area, most trains will be either Metro high frequency, driverless trains or Sydney Trains services which stop frequently at most stations. These services are not booked and you can pay by just tapping on and tapping off using contactless payment or an Opal card.
NSW TrainLink Intercity services provide train services to and from Sydney metro areas to surrounding areas such as the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Newcastle, South Coast, Southern Highlands and Hunter. These services are not booked and you can pay by just tapping on and tapping off using contactless payment or an Opal card.
NSW TrainLink Regional Trains and Coaches travel all across the state and you must book your seat and buy your ticket before you travel.

Buses
Buses operate all across the state. Within Sydney, Newcastle and surrounding areas you can pay for your service by tapping and tapping off using contactless payment or an Opal card and in most cases cash is not accepted. In some regional areas you may need to pay for your service using contactless payment or using cash.

Ferries
Ferries operate around Sydney Harbour and elsewhere across the state. You can use contactless payment or an Opal card on any ferries starting with F around Sydney Harbour (e.g. F1, F2, F3 etc.) and the Stockton Ferry in Newcastle. Other ferries are privately operated and have separate payments.
