About trackwork

To maintain a high standard of safety and reliability across the transport network, it is essential to carry out regular trackwork.

Sections of the tracks are closed so maintenance crews can work safely and efficiently while fixing and upgrading the track and surrounding infrastructure.

The majority of trackwork is done outside of peak times, mostly overnight or on weekends. However sometimes it is necessary to carry out trackwork on weekdays.

How you can check for trackwork

Planned trackwork information is usually available up to two weeks in advance.

Replacement bus services

Replacement bus services are often used where there is trackwork for light and heavy rail or service disruption. Trackwork may also require changes to the timetable and route.

You may not need to tap on or tap off from a replacement bus service, however you must still carry a valid ticket. Please have your Opal card, contactless payment card, or Opal single trip ticket before boarding. Fines apply if you travel without a valid ticket.

If you require wheelchair accessible transport through areas affected by trackwork please contact your local station or operator beforehand to arrange a low-floor bus or other suitable vehicle. Please allow additional travel time.

Space is sometimes limited aboard replacement bus services. Be aware that luggage trolleys and other bulky items are carried at the driver's discretion. You may have to wait for a bus with space available. Bikes are also not permitted on Southwest Link buses (SW1, SW2 and SW3) that operate between Sydenham and Bankstown as they are difficult to stow without inconveniencing or potentially endangering other passengers.

Future trackwork

You can download the proposed trackwork calendar for an overview of future planned trackwork across the Sydney Metro, Sydney Trains and Intercity network. However, it is just a guide and is subject to change.
